2020 has been a year that has taken so much away from us, but it has also given us all time to think and reflect. Granted, we have all had to fall in line with restrictions that have been placed on us by the Government (that's another story for a non - professional platform!), but what is has given us is extra time with our immediate households and family and the opportunity to reflect on our lives and the course we are taking.(Don't worry, this blog is not about my deepest inner feelings and dreams, but more about feeling the fear and doing it anyway.)
The memory of where this journey began for me is still vivid in my mind. Sitting in one of the parks in Sale, sun shining in the sky, sat with our favourite family friends (2 metres apart obviously) with the kids running around without a care in the world. We got onto the topic of work (like so many others, I had been made redundant because of COVID) and what our dream job would be. When it got to my turn, Interior Design were the first words that passed my lips. Randomly, our friend Danielle told me about the journey one of her friends had taken and how she had changed direction and took a course to set up as an Interior Designer. From this point, my mind was made up. 2020 was going to be a year to remember for me for all of the right reasons.
This is where Jo Chrobak and her Interior Design Business School came into play. After a lot of research (I mean weeks of searching and boring my wife to tears about it), I decided to follow my head and heart and sign up to idbs online. This was the only course I could find that gives you the tools to learn the detail of interior design as well as coaching you through the process of starting a business and building a brand.
So, how easy is it to learn to become an interior designer online? Honest answer, its not easy at all! Now I have graduated from the course, would I say it was worth it? 100% YES YES YES.
Since starting the course, I was fortunate enough to have found full time employment which during a pandemic was no mean feat. This gave me a conundrum and challenge of balancing a part time course and working full time. To make a career change, this will be the norm for many of us. I am here to say, it is bloody hard work and you will pushed to your absolute limit, but it is possible and it is worth it.
The course consists of interactive modules as well as weekly zoom meetings. You are immediately put out of your comfort zone and this sets the scene for the remainder of the course. It isn't for the faint hearted but you just have to feel the fear and do it anyway.
With my background in Account Management within the volatile fashion industry, I have had to tackle tough conversations and face up to some very difficult situations. This has put me in good stead for this course. Setting up your own website, creating a brand, registering your business, speaking to strangers about your business. These are the things that you would never have dreamed of doing before you enter the idbs world but it is something you will need to face up to in order to be a success.
This is where the skills and talents of Jo Chrobak come into play. She has put together a course that has been designed to perfection. Not only that, she has been an absolutely incredible support to us all throughout our journey. Always available to give constructive feedback on our work and giving the guidance and support when you need it most. If you have any concerns or if you are having a tough week, she is there for you. She has the perfect balance of pushing you to your limit as well as spotting and nurturing your own unique talents. You are not trained to be a clone. You are encouraged to embrace your own style and niche and then turn this into a brand. This is this perfect formula for me and why this course is such a huge success.
I won't give too much away about the course but completing this has been one of the biggest achievements in my life. I am pursuing my dream of becoming an interior designer. I already have delighted clients that have had their home dreams realised and I have made friends for life through this course.
You meet people who share your passion, your dreams and your pain. This is possibly one of the gifts that money cannot buy. I have found a group of ridiculously talented individuals that I will keep in touch with and support forever. We have been through tough times together and really leaned upon each other and this has formed a bond that I really hope wont be broken. We have all started on this journey together and will share each others highs and lows from this point on and this is something that is priceless.
My only advice for you all would be, if you want something, do all you can to go get it. We are put on this earth once, be brave and follow your dreams. I have and I am so excited to see more smiles on my clients faces as well as transforming their homes through the joy of interior design.
